The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) isn't just about Specifications. CSI's motto "Knowledge for Creating and Sustaining the Built Environment" extends well beyond specifications and encompasses all aspects of the design and construction process. CSI's membership numbers in excess of 17,000 nationwide and includes individuals employed in every discipline related to design and construction including: Architects, Engineers, Specifiers, Interior Designers, Facility Managers, Building Owners, Property Managers, Developers, Contractors, Subcontractors, Material Suppliers, Manufacturers, Testing Laboratories, Governmental Agencies, Code Authorities, National Standards Bodies, and more.

CSI has instituted a Certification Program that is designed to test an individual's knowledge of the various requirements of the design and construction process. Successful completion of the examination entitles individuals to use the appropriate initials after their name and be recognized as a competent and dedicated professional. Membership in CSI is not required to sit for the exams.


Certifications
 

Construction Documents Technologist (CDT)
  • Of value to anyone who employs design and construction personnel because a CDT has demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the requirements of the Construction Contract Documents. The CDT is a prerequisite for all other levels of certification.
Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR)
  • Of value to Manufacturers who employ Product Representatives because the CCPR commands the respect and trust of design professionals.
  • Of value to design professionals who can rely on the knowledge, experience, and integrity of a Certified Construction Product Representative.
Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA)
  • Of value to Contractors and Subcontractors to ensure their personnel understand the requirements on Construction Contract Administration.
  • Of value to Design Professionals to ensure their personnel understand the requirements of Construction Contract Administration.
  • Of value to Owners to assure that the administration of their construction contract is done by an individual who understands the applicable requirements. Some Owners may require that the design professional hired to administer the construction contract be a CCCA.
Certified Construction Specifier (CCS)
  • Of value to design professionals to ensure quality in their specifications.
  • Of value to Owners who hire design professionals to assure quality specifications. Some Owners require that the design professional hired to prepare the Project Manual be a Certified Specifier.
  • Of value to contractors who must adhere to requirements of the Project Manual.
  • Of value to manufacturers of products to ensure their products are properly represented in Project Manuals.

Certification Exams
 

The next exam will be held in Houston in the Spring of 2010. Additional information, prerequisite information, costs, time, etc., are available from CSI National's Certification Page at 1-800-689-2900. Deadline for registration is January 31, 2010. Early Registration is December 1, 2009.

Study Groups

Local study groups are available through CSI Houston. A study class for the CDT exam will be held in the weeks leading up to the exam. More details will be made available after the first of the year. Cost is $75 for Houston CSI members, $100 for non-members, free for full time students. Bring payment to first meeting.

AIA Learning Units

Of interest to architects: AIA learning units are available for these study classes. Most local CSI chapters, including CSI Houston, provide study courses in advance of the examination to assist individuals in preparing for the exams.
